Spirituals to Soul exhibit

SPIRITUALS TO SOUL: African American Musical Heritage in Monmouth 1880-1980

Monmouth County Historical Association Museum, Freehold, NJ

"Spirituals to Soul: African American Musical Heritage in Monmouth 1880-1980"
documents black performers from our county who brought to life the sounds of spirituals, jazz, gospel, doo wop, rhythm & blues and soul. Their stories are interpreted through rare photos, recordings and artifacts.

Working closely with the musical historian/curators, Pam and Charlie Horner, I was the sole designer, preparator, production coordinator, and installer. The 750 sq ft project entailed 6 musical genres, sound listening stations, floor to ceiling graphics, 3 flatscreens, custom artifact mounts, reader rails, a 14'x20' exterior banner, original logotype, visual themeing and branding, a promotional 6x9 postcard and web, social media graphics.

Over 200 people attended the opening reception. 90 year old Clifford Johnson played his saxophone while 3 venerable Asbury Park musicians plugged in the refurbished Turf Club marquee - relit for the first time in 40 years.
